Welcome New Student

We are excited to announce that Eli has joined our program at Meadowlark Elementary.  Eli has attended Andover Schools for last year.  He is in the fourth grade.  We are very excited to have these Eli as our newest member to join our ELP team.   There are now twenty-three students in the ELP program for the South schools, with many more to come!!!

Auction

Our very first Case Cash Auction will be on Wednesday, December 2nd.  This much anticipated tradition takes place three times a year.  For this activity, the students are asked to bring 3-4 items to contribute to the auction.  All items are then displayed and bidding for the items begins using the Case Cash that the students have earned up to this point in the school year.  Some suggested items would be gently used items, hand held challenging games, food or snacks, card games, or anything that the child believes the other students might enjoy for their earned Case Cash.  Students who haven’t been in ELP for the whole year will have less points and will therefore not be required to bring in as many items.  Please send the items by Tuesday, December 1st so the auction will be ready for the students on the 2nd.  Thanks for your support of this activity.

Vocabulary

Over the last three weeks we have been learning some new vocabulary using Vocabulary Cartoons.  The students have been working with a vocabulary flip book that focuses on the antonym, synonym, definition, sentence, and a drawing for each Vocabulary Cartoon.  We will continue working on these words after the Thanksgiving break.

Quotation Quizzlers

The students have been working on a very difficult challenge that involves the use of a blank grid with scrambled letters placed in vertical columns beneath the squares of the grid. The students are required to unscramble the letters to fill in the spaces on the grid and spell out a quotation from a famous American that spans a variety of topics from art, to sports, to history, and cover a range of themes from friendship, to integrity.  The unscrambling of the words requires exercising a few of students’ toughest mental muscles—critical thinking, deductive reasoning, logic, and word analysis, among others.

Right Now

Currently we are doing some group research into the information surrounding “The First Thanksgiving” held between the Indians and the Pilgrims.  The students have learned what it means to be a Historian and to use Primary Source information to make educated guesses about what might have happened in our past.  This mini-unit has been very interesting and I believe everyone is learning a lot of new information about our fore-fathers and the traditions that were established at that time.
